Are international waters law-free?
Kinda sorta. According to lawyer Martin Radvan, “Once you’re outside a country’s territorial waters, you must follow the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Countries can be put in front of an international tribunal for breaching any of the rules of the convention. Problems arise with individuals, like Somali pirates. In that case, the UN can’t do much but appeal to the home offender’s country.”
