Towards the end of the Games, the big sponsors will throw parties so the athletes can unwind. Generally, they’re exclusive to the athletes – so no media, maybe a few coaches, but the public aren’t allowed in. However, there are quite a few very good-looking female groupies who seem to have a knack of finding their way past the burly security guards.
At the Barcelona Games in 1992, the raunchiness spilled outdoors. Male athletes were seen in the back streets surrounding the club Studio 54 with local women, unleashing a seemingly endless build-up of sexual tension.
As you may know, in ancient times they competed in the nude. Orsippus was doing the 200-yard sprint – battling hot and humid conditions – and halfway through the race he felt his loincloth loosen. He didn’t want that to slow him down, so he yanked it off and threw it away. That’s largely where the nudity thing came from.
Bob Beamon was a long-jump champ who firmly believed in abstaining before competition. He broke this mantra on the eve of the 1968 long-jump final and the next day he smashed the world record by almost two feet [61cm].
