Heather McCartney

To mark the 10th anniversary of her infamous AFL Grand Final nudie incident, we revisit the iconic moment with our favourite Scottish-Aussie model, influencer, fundraiser and swimwear boss…

Welcome back to MAXIM, Heather. This is your third appearance! What have you been up to since we last saw you?
Thank you! It’s great to be back. Since we last spoke, I’ve been incredibly busy building my swimwear brand Saltire Swimwear, travelling and immersing myself in new experiences. I’ve also been focusing on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, fundraising for causes I’m passionate about and spending quality time with my family. Life’s been an exciting whirlwind!

You look great. You have told us previously that your best assets are your positive attitude, great smile and good calves. What else would you add to this?
Thank you! I’d probably add my resilience to the list. I’ve faced challenges along the way, but I always bounce back stronger. I’m also proud of my ability to connect with people, whether through my work or social media. I love bringing positivity into people’s lives.

You were born and grew up in Scotland but backpacked Down Under in 2012 and have stayed here since. What made you call Australia home?
I backpacked to Australia in 2012 and the moment I arrived I fell in love with the country’s vibrant culture and stunning landscapes. The laid-back lifestyle, friendly people and incredible beaches made me feel at home. What I’ve loved most is the sense of freedom and adventure Australia offers – there’s always something new to explore.

What are three things people would be most surprised to know about you?

  1. I’ve been single for six years, focusing on my personal growth and career; 2. I hold two different bachelor’s degrees, which might surprise people who only know me through social media; 3. I have over 30 social media accounts for all different niche that I really struggle to keep up with.

You made worldwide news as the girl who stripped naked in a corporate box at the 2014 AFL Grand Final. For those who don’t remember, tell us how this incident unfolded.
It’s a moment I’ll never forget! I was caught up in the excitement of the game and, in a spontaneous act of fun and rebellion, I decided to strip off in the corporate box after losing a bet. It was meant to be a light-hearted gesture, but it quickly gained attention. The atmosphere was electric, and, in that moment, it just felt like the right thing to do… but looking back, I can see why it caused such a stir!

How did you score an AFL Grand Final seat in a corporate box?
I was lucky enough to be invited by a friend who had connections in the corporate world. It was such a great opportunity to experience the AFL Grand Final from such an exclusive vantage point.

Where did the security guards take you after escorting you out of the box?
My friend and I actually managed to evade the police, briefly, by running into an elevator. We went up, got out, ran around, then jumped back into the elevator and went down. It turned into quite the chase! Eventually, about four police officers caught up with me and escorted me outside. It was an adrenaline-fuelled experience – like something out of a movie!

Did you get your clothes back?
My clothes were beside my bag, so they weren’t taken. I managed to get back into my dress before the security arrived and the police chase began. The only item I lost was a G-string, which I accidentally catapulted out the window towards Sir Tom Jones. Apparently, he kept it!

How long were you arrested for?
I was arrested for about 16 hours. I had a lawyer and there was a court hearing with a very nice judge on the Sunday. They let me go home with a fine and a really bad hangover.

What did you learn in aftermath of this hilariously daring stunt?
It’s one of those stories that will stay with me forever. While it was a crazy moment, it also taught me a lot about responsibility, the consequences of my actions and the impact they can have on others. I’ve since learned to channel that spontaneous energy into more positive outlets. I’ve also learned the importance of thinking before acting – especially when you’re in the public eye.

Any regrets or would you do it again?
No real regrets, but I wouldn’t do it again. It was a wild, unforgettable moment but I’ve grown a lot since then and I’d rather make headlines for more positive reasons now.

Have you been to any AFL matches since?
I’ve been to a few games since then and I’ve kept my clothes on! I’ve enjoyed the games without any incidents – just a bit of cheering from the stands.

What do you love about the game?
I’ve always enjoyed the energy of AFL games – the passion of the fans is infectious. While I wasn’t a die-hard fan before, that moment certainly made me appreciate the sport more and I’ve followed it more closely ever since. I’ve got a soft spot for the Sydney Swans – they’ve got a great history and I love their fighting spirit on the field.

Got a favourite player?
I like Charlie Curnow [Carlton] because of his exceptional athleticism and impact on the game. His strong marking and goal-scoring capabilities, combined with his work ethic and resilience, make him a dynamic and exciting player to watch. He consistently brings energy and determination to the field, which is inspiring.

If you’re invited to this year’s AFL Grand Final, tell us what goes down on the day.
I’ll definitely be there to enjoy the game and soak up the atmosphere. I’ll be cheering on my team and celebrating with friends, but I’ll be keeping it classy this time around!

When was the last time you were naked in public?
It was definitely back in 2014 at the AFL Grand Final. Since then, I’ve kept my public appearances fully clothed – no need to repeat history!

When do you feel sexy?
When I’m confident and comfortable in my own skin – whether it’s in a great outfit, after a workout or just being in a positive state of mind.

What do you do when you’re not on social media or posing for MAXIM?
I’m usually working on my swimwear brand, staying active with workouts, dancing or travelling. I also spend time fundraising for causes I care about and taking care of my animals.

You have a huge social media following. Do you still have an Amazon wish list for those who want to gift you something?
I do, but it’s more of a fun thing for my followers. I always appreciate the thoughtfulness, but what really matters to me is the connection I have with my fans.

Would you ever date one of your social media followers?
I’m open to the idea, but it would have to be someone I connect with on a deeper level. For me, it’s all about chemistry and shared values.

Describe your ideal man.
My ideal man is confident, kind and has a great sense of humour. I’m drawn to someone who’s passionate about life, shares my values and isn’t afraid to be themselves.

How can a man potentially win his way to your heart?
Be genuine, make me laugh and show kindness – not just to me but to everyone around you. I appreciate someone who is thoughtful, supportive and isn’t afraid to be vulnerable.

Lastly, finish this sentence: Public nudity is…
Something that should be approached with caution – it can be liberating, but it’s important to be aware of the context and respect.
