The Aptera

This solar-powered EV is finally nearing production, with a teardrop-shaped design and a drag coefficient of 0.13, making it more aerodynamic than the Mercedes-Benz EQXX…

Aptera’s solar-powered EV is just about ready for its moment in the spotlight. There are still a few hurdles to jump – like good old funding – but the San Diego startup could hit production within the year (or two).
The Launch Edition Aptera still resembles its teaser version from back in 2019. It still has a super sleek teardrop shape and two large fenders covering its front wheels, but now welcomes a two-tone paint job and a more dynamic lighting setup.
That distinctive teardrop profile has a drag coefficient of 0.13, which makes it more aerodynamic than the envelope-pushing Mercedes-Benz EQXX, which has a drag coefficient of 0.17.
The Launch Edition will be able to do away with 0 to 100 km/h in 4 seconds and will have a top speed of 162 km/h; with an electric motor in each wheel, you’d expect some go in those legs. But despite putting up decent performance numbers – the vehicle really shines (and saves) when it comes to efficiency.
Impressively, it will be able to travel at least 645 km on a single charge. Although less than the industry leading Lucid Air (835 km), the Aptera’s nose, roof and hatch are all lined with 700 watts of solar panels which generate 65 km of range a day. You could easily go months between charges – the only time you’d be happy to have a dry spell.
It’s not only about solar though. For longer drives, it can be electrically charged up to a total range of 1,610 km with an upgraded battery pack, or 400 km with the base-level battery.
Despite the sleekness, its aerodynamic rear has a lot of boot space. The two-person Codex interior, meanwhile, is more minimalistic than an outhouse – with just two screens and a steering wheel.
The company has already raised $85 million, but needs an additional 50. Any takers? ■
