A Vision of the Future

Inspired by the experimental C111 prototypes of the 1960s and ’70s, the Vision One-Eleven is a glimpse into the future of electric supercars…

Having electrified SUVs, sedans and even vans, it’s no surprise Merc is now setting its sights on the supercar. The Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven is their ‘vision’ of what all-electric two-seat performance cars may look like – and the future tech they will possess.

We all know Mercedes can go epic with their designs – their Vision AVTR was a mobility concept inspired by the film Avatar after all. However, the One- Eleven is slightly more grounded in reality, taking inspiration from the experimental C111 prototypes of the 1960s and 70s. That inspiration begins with the ‘adoption’ of the C111’s low front end, bonnet ducts and vents. The front and rear ‘grills’ now contain 3D pixelated light clusters that mimic the old car’s lights while also impressing Knight Rider fans. Both displays can be used to convey messages to other road users – although emoticons are banned.

Unlike the C111, the One-Eleven features a more rounded edge to aid in its aerodynamic efforts. The copper-orange alubeam paintwork is easily more impressive than the shade used on the originals – no contest actually.

Powering the Vision One is an axial-flux motor, where electromagnetic flow runs parallel to the motor’s rotational axis. Compared to radial-flux motors, the axials have higher and longer power reserves, which deliver nothing but efficiency. They also take up one third of the space – meaning more room for the interior.

Looking like a 1990s flashback, the cabin takes hints from Mercedes’ F1 machines. You may have to look twice, but the steering wheel is inspired by Lewis Hamilton’s – driving ability not included. Featuring a gigantic stretched out digital panel, certain dash features can be accessed using augmented reality.
Like its C111 muse, it’s unlikely the Vision One-Eleven will make production.
