We’ve all seen supercars and superbikes, even superyachts. Now, we have the underwater version, the Super Sub. Not to be confused with the latest sandwich from Subway – it’s the latest toy from Dutch submersible manufacturer U-Boat Worx.
Following the well received launch of last year’s Nemo sub, U-Boat Worx is setting the bar even higher for the high end, underwater explorer market. After years of research they have now produced the fastest private submarine on earth – essentially a supercar that can hold its breath.
Since its inception in 2005, U-Boat Worx has been producing some of the world’s finest and most capable submersibles for both scientific research and recreational applications. Officially the most hydrodynamic submarine on the market, it looks like something out of a science fiction movie, with its dome front end, long tail with red fins and little side wings.
After climbing through the roof-mounted hatch, a pilot and two passengers can enjoy the climate controlled supercar interior with individual seats and five-point belt buckle harnesses – with an un-obstructed view of what’s ahead. Massive screens provide all the vitals about the Super Sub and its environment, while a pair of video game style joysticks help you control your underwater cruise.
The Sub also features a fully acrylic pressure hull, a Sonar system, powerful LED spotlights, a high-fidelity Bluetooth sound system – and even a cold storage box for food, drinks, bait and tackle.
Thanks to four powerful thrusters that deliver a total of 60 kW, the craft can achieve a top speed of 8 knots (14.84 km), which is faster than a bottlenose dolphin and 5 knots faster than your average submersible vessel. Such power also allows for steep 30 degree climbs, and insane 300 metre dives – all while enjoying an almost 360-degree view.
Weighing 9,000 kg, the lithium-ion batteries onboard are specially engineered for low weight and endurance, while the high-capacity cells give the thrusters the performance and speed they need.
The Super Sub is more than a ticket to the underwater world, it’s a backstage pass to take your fishing game to the next level. U-Boat Worx says the first Super Sub is already sold, to be delivered this year. Looking to the near future, the Super Sub will spawn a full range of production models and concepts, ensuring U-Boat Worx breaks the box office better than Aquaman ever could.
