Porsche is celebrating its birthday in Australia. Well, sort of. The brand is celebrating its 70th year Down Under this year, and it’s developed a special-edition to celebrate. The creatively named ‘911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition’ will be the first market-specific special edition based on a Porsche GT car, and is also the first look at the GT3 Touring package.
Featuring a modern and metallic version of the iconic original Fish Silver Grey colour on the exterior (Aussie flag badges included), this also marks the first GT3 to have a non-black interior. Instead, there are Graphite Blue leather bucket seats with chequered inlays, Crayon stitching, and humble Porsche crests on the headrests. Other unique visuals are the black brake calipers, the dark silver alloy wheels, and the illuminated sill plates (which read ‘GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition’). It’s not just a wingless GT3 with a badge.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.0 litre flat-six engine with 375kW of power and a 9000rpm redline, good for a 3.4 second sprint to 100km/h. The engine is derived from the 911 R endurance racer unit – and is actually used in the 911 Cup car. Also impressive, this is the first road-going Porsche 911 to feature a double-wishbone front suspension, a stiffer setup that doesn’t diminish the car’s ability to smooth out bumps.
Heard of Norm Hamilton? Don’t worry, not even die-hard Porsche fans know of him. He was the man to introduce Porsche to Australia – the second market outside of Europe – exhibiting a pair of 356s at South Melbourne Town Hall in November 1951. Onya, Normy.
Exclusivity have been synonymous with Porsche for decades. The 70 Years Porsche Australia will be limited to 25 units – so imagine showing up with one to your next Porsche club meeting.
