Will this year’s box office smash become the biggest sensation in home entertainment?
Next week is a huge week in the world of home entertainment. Why? Because the biggest film of the year will be available to buy on your favourite digital platform. After conquering cinemas across the globe, Top Gun: Maverick will set its sights on a different audience. You’ll be able to watch the hugely successful sequel to the film that made Tom Cruise a superstar in the comfort of your own home.
Since its long-awaited release, box office records have been falling in Top Gun: Maverick’s jet stream. Not only is the air-born actioner Tom Cruise’s most successful film ever—no mean feat considering that the actor has starred in multiple Mission: Impossible films and blockbusters like Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds—but Top Gun: Maverick is an official member of the global Billionaire club and the third most successful film released Down Under ever after earning over AU$87million to date. Only Avatar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens have made more money Down Under.
Directed by Tony Scott and released in 1986, the original Top Gun took audience’s breath away when it introduced cavalier fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his fellow Top Gun recruits including Goose (Anthony Edwards) and Iceman (Val Kilmer). Now, over three decades later, the long-awaited follow-up is here, and Maverick is now training a new class of arrogant flyboys for a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. And with a cast boasting Jennifer Connelly, John Hamm and Miles Teller plus a soundtrack that combines the soaring strains of Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer and Lady Gaga with retro tunes by ‘80s legend Harold Faltermeyer and Kenny “Dangerzone” Loggins, Top Gun: Maverick is the perfect collision of nostalgia and high-octane thrills.
The aerial stunts that stunned cinema audiences will now be able to be watched again and again in crystal clear ultra-sharp 4K when purchased from digital retailers like the Apple TV app, Google TV and Prime Video Store. When the actors take flight, acting inside a Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet breaking the sound barrier, the results are exhilarating. No other film matches the pure adrenalin rush of watching Maverick buzz the tower.
With the fire and star power in abundance, the question isn’t will Top Gun: Maverick match the astonishing success it had at the cinema box office. It’s how soon will it take for Maverick to soar to the top of the charts again. And we’ll find out next week!
