Tailored Torpedo

The Ferrari SP-8 is a one-of-a-kind supercar built for a Taiwanese client, featuring a redesigned roofless body, a tweaked interior, and the acclaimed V8 engine from the F8 Spider…

Ferrari has a long history of making sexy machines that no one can afford, and their latest is the one-off SP-8, ordered by a cashed up customer from Taiwan. The name comes from part of Ferrari’s Special Projects programme – with the ‘8’ being lucky in Chinese culture.

As the first order of business, it lost the folding retractable hard-top, which meant the entire body had to be redesigned, and get some serious time in the wind tunnel. Here its aerodynamics were tested through simulations to ensure stability at high speeds – for the vehicle and any hair pieces.

Not just a roofless F8 though, this one-and-done gets a redesigned front end with fresh slim headlights, tail lights ala the Ferrari Roma, and five spoke alloys in tribute to rims worn by the legendary F40. What catches the eye first – and rightly so – is the fusion of the carbon fibre front with the silver surfaces on the rear. Unavailable at Bunnings, the finish is a combo of matte Argento Micalizzato with carbon fibre sections finished in glossy Blue Sandstone.

Inside, the centre console gains a new gear selector featuring toggles from the SF90, instead of buttons from the F8. The bucket seats drip in navy blue Alcantara while yellow detailing surrounds the dash nicely.

Keeping it 100, it sticks with the same platform, chassis and engine as the F8 Spider, rather than the newer 296 GTB. The new owner won’t be disappointed with the 530kW the twin-turbocharged V8 serves up, especially since the SP-8’s lighter weight make it quicker than standard model’s 0-100 time of 2.9 seconds.

Before it was swapped out by the hybrid Ferrari 296 GTS, the F8 Spider sold in Australia for $536,888, peanuts compared to this latest creation – estimated to have cost the owner millions. Before being delivered, it will be displayed at the Ferrari Museum at Maranello, to remind us all we should have invested in Bitcoin sooner.
